Serenity's Shero for November: Michelle Obama

AddThis Social Bookmark Button

Every month, I will feature a person in my blog who I feel has impacted society in a positive manner. For the month of November 2009, I have chosen Michelle Obama, first Black First Lady of the United States.

first_lady_michelle_obama_450_737043391From the Chicago Tribune:

First Lady Michelle Robinson Obama was born in Chicago in 1964. After finishing high school, she graduated from Princeton in 1985 with a B.A. in sociology.

She graduated from Harvard Law School in 1988, and began her law career at Sidley and Austin, a Chicago firm where she met her husband Barack Obama.

Michelle Obama served as associate dean of students at the University of Chicago starting in 1996. In 2002, she took the position of executive director for community affairs at the University of Chicago Hospitals.

She was named Vice President for Community and External Affairs in 2005.
Michelle Obama is the mother of two children, Malia, 10, and Sasha, 7.
Michelle is the epitome of intelligence, grace, class and is a representation of real Black womanhood. Like Michelle, I am an educated 40-something Black woman born and raised on the south side of Chicago, IL.
Michelle represents myself and most of the women I grew up with and know now -- strong and intelligent, warm and wonderful women: good mothers, loyal and loving wives, and consummate professionals.
Yet, the women that I speak of and that Michelle represents are very rarely seen and heard from in modern media. All too often, we see the parade of loud, uneducated, overweight, mother to multiple children by multiple men, financially struggling, unable to maintain stable relationships with men, as the the constant portrayal of Black womanhood in current television shows and movies.
And it's a shame, because while that component of Black women does exist, it's not ALL we are.Not even CLOSE.
It is my hope that as more people come to see the beauty and strength that is Michelle obama, more and more of us can come out of the shadows and into the forefront in the minds and hearts of the media and America.

After Almost 9 Years...Still The One

AddThis Social Bookmark Button

After almost nine years of wedded bliss, Antonio and I are still together and are as committed to our marriage as we were the day we made our vows before the judge in Vegas.

It's been an interesting ride, to say the least. We have been through being a military family, far-too-frequent separations due to Antonio's Army duties, to include his 15-month separation deployment to Iraq, traveling across country from North Carolina to Phoenix and beyond.

We have been jobless together, homeless and carless together, but we were never hopeless. The financial struggles have been many, but we are rich with love, friendship respect, honesty and fun.

It's been an adventure so far, and I look forward to continuing the wonder of our continued journey together.

The picture below was taken by our friend Angelina at the Doc and Eddy birthday party.

Above is a picture of the birthday boy and girls taken by my hubby, Antonio.

WTF - Sexually Abused Woman Castrates Father

AddThis Social Bookmark Button

From the NY Daily News:

A Queens judge Friday slapped Brigitte Harris with the toughest sentence possible for killing and dismembering her father to avenge years of sexual abuse.

Supreme Court Justice Arthur Cooperman sentenced Harris to five to 15 years for the suffocation slaying of Eric Goodridge in her Rockaway apartment on July 28, 2007.

Harris admitted plotting to sever her father's penis with a scalpel by researching the case of Lorena and John Bobbitt. She wanted to prevent Goodridge, 55, from returning to his native Liberia with his granddaughters, she said.

"I never intended to kill him, and I'm sorry for his family's loss," she told Cooperman.

Cooperman acknowledged the findings of mental health professionals who agreed Goodridge repeatedly sexually abused his daughter from age 3, but he cautioned against victims taking the law into their own hands.

"Sometimes the crime itself warrants punishment," Cooperman said.

The judge also chided jurors for giving in to sympathies for Harris in reaching a second-degree manslaughter verdict that was inconsistent with the facts.

Four jurors attended Friday's sentencing and, in letters, urged Cooperman to set Harris free so she could seek psychiatric care. Harris attorney Arthur Aidala said were it not for the jury, Harris, 29, would probably be spending the rest of her life behind bars.

"They handcuffed the judge from committing an injustice," Aidala said.

"Brigitte has shown no remorse," countered Harris' aunt, Comfort Lawrence.

WTF - Cat Comes Down With Swine Flu?

WTF -- now your CAT can catch swine flu from their human owners?

From Yahoo! Buzz

Please don't sneeze on your pet
It's enough that you have to worry about you and your kids catching swine flu this season. But now you also have to be concerned for … your cat. That's right. Your furry friend can catch it, from you. At least that's the case for a 13-year-old feline in Iowa diagnosed with H1N1 after its two owners both came down with the flu. The cat was treated at a veterinary hospital after appearing lethargic, losing its appetite and having trouble breathing. All three have recovered. Although this is the first documented case, consider it a cautionary tale. While searches on "swine flu symptoms" were up this week almost 400%, lookups on "swine flu in cats" also increased. (Read up on how to protect pets from the swine flu.)

Thankfully, we only have dogs here. But the minute one of them starts looking crazy sick, it's off to the vet...I don't want to catch swine flu from THEM!

These are pictures my hubby took of me on my birthday -- I think for 41 years old, I am looking pretty nice! Good or bad, I would love comments and opinions from you guys! (And yes, those are my locs, that is my real hair, and I do not wear extensions, weaves, pieces or synethic or human-hair braids! There is nothing wrong with that at ALL, but I am ALL me -- in the real -- for these photos.)
